Dear teachers and my fellow schoolmates,

I’m Zhang Yixuan from Class 6, Grade 9. I’m so glad that I could take this opportunity to share with you something about “Mother’s Day”.

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring mothers and celebrating motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. It’s a day to show thanks to mothers. This celebration first appeared in ancient Greece. During the 1600s, this festival was introduced to Great Britain. As Christianity spread throughout Europe, the celebration gradually got popular among other European countries.

Modern Mother’s Day originated in the United States. It usually falls on the second Sunday of May each year. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium which also celebrate this festival by following the American tradition.

Mothers usually receive gifts on this day and carnation is regarded as the symbol of love for them. As students, maybe it’s a bit difficult for us to express our love and gratitude to our moms by sending them expensive gifts. However, don’t you think small things like doing housework and cooking a big dinner may make our mothers much happier? So, what are you waiting for? Let’s take action now.
